helen keller quotes

Do you believe in miracles? The story of Helen Keller’s life is no less than a miracle. A writer, political activist, lecturer, and disability rights activist… Helen Keller quotes proved that you can be limitless if you work hard and believe in yourself.

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia (Alabama). Her full name was Helen Adams Keller. Helen was born as a normal and healthy child but at the age of 19 months, she got sick and this period of time completely changed her life. Due to illness, she lost her eyesight and hearing power completely.

It was a tough time for Her parents  Mr. Arthur H Keller and Mrs. Katherine Adam Keller. Poor Helen grew without connecting to the outer world except for sensing things by touch. This little girl was short-tempered, ill-mannered, and sometimes aggressive. She didn’t even let anyone comb her hair. We can understand how awful it would be when a person can not see and hear anything.

The entry of Anne Sullivan: Her teacher and a good friend

Her parents realized that they need professional help for Helen. After consulting the director of Perkins institute for the blind (in Boston), Mrs. Annie Sullivan was recommended to them. Annie Sullivan had been blind but fortunately, after surgery, she could get her eyesight back.

The biggest challenge for Mrs. Annie Sullivan was to communicate with the little girl because she was not only blind but also deaf. But Annie Sullivan was not ready to give up easily.

If you think about it you would come to know the real hero behind Helen Keller’s life is Annie Sullivan who believed in Helen, who believed in herself, and did not lose hope. She had a vision and she believed that it was possible. At that time, She didn’t know how but she believed that one day it would happen. Even Helen’s parents were ready to give up and compromise with the situation but Annie Sullivan was not.

Now the interesting part begins. Annie Sullivan used to give some object in Helen’s hands and make her recognize and feel it and write the letter of the words on her other hand. For example, if she was holding a doll, Mrs. Annie Sullivan used to write DOLL on her hand. Helen used to repeat the same writing letters on her teacher’s hand.

Finally, Helen was understanding the things

One day Mrs. Annie Sullivan put Helen’s hand in the water coming from a hand pump and spelled the words on her hand W-A-T-E-R, and it was the turning point of Helen’s life. Helen finally understood and started recognizing objects and other things. It was also the happiest day of Mr. Annie Sullivan’s life because it was like getting the fruit of her hard work.

Helen was a brilliant student and a fast learner. Soon she started to read with the help of braille books. By the age of 10, she was not only able to read braille books but also could use a typewriter which is itself an incredible achievement for Helen as well as for Annie Sullivan. It’s a perfect example that your obstacles can never stop you from achieving what you want. The only thing you keep in mind is to trust the process and believe in yourself.

Now, Helen went a step ahead and started learning how to speak from Mrs. Sarah fuller.  As Halen could not hear or see, she started recognizing the sound vibrations and lips movement placing her fingers on the speaker’s lips and throat. Slowly she got good command of this skill as well.

Her education…

At the age of 16, Helen went for higher education at Radcliffe college in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and earned her degree with honors in bachelor of art. Annie Sullivan helped her in her study at her college as well by interpreting all the lectures and assignments. Helen was the first deafblind person to earn a bachelor’s degree and she did not stop there.

Contribution to the society

After her education, she decided to serve so she worked for the American Foundation for the blind till 1968. During this, she also traveled to about 35 countries. Helen was a well-known personality at that time and she campaigned for world peace, labor rights, women’s suffrage, and people with disabilities.

Helen was also great at writing. She has written 14 books and hundreds of speeches and essays. Helen Keller also shared her experience with her teacher Annie Sullivan and the challenges of her life in her autobiography “The story of my life”. She also showed her interest in politics and joined The Socialist party of America.

In 1968, at the age of 87, Helen said goodbye to this world and left behind her beautiful thoughts, courage not to give up, and extraordinary achievements.
